"Tales of the ephemeral based on the flotsam of life" are found in pants pockets and under seat cushions. Are we better for having experienced Timothy Leary and LSD, the Black Panthers, Kent State, the Mekong Delta and the Feminine Mystique? Were the 60s the best of times or the worst of times? At The Psychedelic '60s, the University of Virginia explores the historical, cultural and social context of the celebrated summer of love to move beyond simple nostalgia into healthy skepticism. The site traces the iconoclasm of the 60s to Thoreau's pre-environmentalism and Whitman's mysticism, and puts the issues of discontent in context with headlines, images, concert bills, posters and - at the heart of it all - the music of groups like Moby Grape, The Velvet Underground and Country Joe.

Those long-lost images of mom's marshmallow and Jell-O salad, dad's BBQ cookbook and such forgotten reference works as "Cooking with Dr. Pepper" have been retrieved from the back of the pantry and put on display in all their repulsive glory at the Gallery of Regrettable Food, which vividly poses the questions "What were they thinking? How did they eat this bilge?"World Press Review

If your teen rolls her eyes at you, sighs in disgust and says "Don't go frontin' my grill, Yo!" take heed. Communications between grown-ups and their kids is tough enough without the vocab getting in the way, so head to Jonathan's Dictionary at Teen Lingo to get down with the kids. How teens, like the rest of us, speak today comes straight from their culture and all that suggests, so some of it's not pretty. Be forewarned that much of the lingo is funny, but it also may offend in its expression of sexual activity and drug use. Jonathan created the site in good spirit, to help youth workers understand teen mentality and culture. But like the minister who tosses "bing-bing" into his sermon, use the lingo with discretion. It's one thing to understand the talk, quite another for anyone over 30 to use it with dignity.Flash Math Creativity
Forget flash cards and step up to Flash Math Creativity, a gallery of beautiful, bizarre and brilliant experiments of Flash movies by designers and imaginative coders who "take little ideas and mess around with them."
Fifteen authors' experiments are included here, and inspired visitors are invited to submit their own work. Manuel Tan, for example, works for a design shop in New York and plays with programmatic movement in Flash, experimenting with motion and behaviors through code. In others, rotation values and color schemes are altered, rectangles are broken at odd angles, and all
manner of experiments resembling everything from architectural sketches to Oriental fan dances are created for visitors to play with and be inspired by.Stop Alien Abductions
Case histories at Stop Abductions.com testify to the utility of the thought screen helmet in blocking telepathic communication from aliens attempting to control innocent earthlings. Invented by Michael Menkin in 1998 and named after the thought screens described by science fiction writer Edward Elmer Smith, the Velostat-shielded helmet can be built at home for $35 following the instructions here.A Long Strange Trip
A buzzing fly guides visitors down a river, into a city of tall buildings and lands them in a therapist's office in this Danny Gomez production, Flashback, where the patient insists to the shrink that he's not crazy as he slowly descends into madness via a fully animated recovered memory therapy session.
Once in the shrink's office and settled on the couch, the patient meets one ghoulish creature after another, each assuring him he has nothing to fear while truly fearsome images and audio take him into his primitive past to explore his inner self. Travel backward with the patient through 100 years of time into previous lives set in a rain forest populated by psychedelia: morphing mushrooms, trippy tree frogs and various mind-bending creatures set against a kaleidoscopic backdrop.
Featured Cool Links
Thanks to H. Michael (Mike) Cunningham, Ph.D. for this months' Cool Links!
History of Electronic Music
The development from 1870 to the present of electronic musical instruments, those that synthesize sound from an electronic source, is presented at 120 Years of Electronic Music. The history of electronic music starts in the mid-19th century with the work of a German physicist who built an instrument to electronically analyze combinations of tones, and continues through experiments like the tone wheel, the vacuum tube, integrated circuitry and digital formats.
Music buffs will discover cool trivia like this: Inventor Raymond Kurzweil, who had developed a revolutionary reading machine for the blind that scanned written materials and read them aloud in a
synthesized voice, was challenged by customer Stevie Wonder to create an electronic instrument that blended the richness of acoustic sound with the control and sound modification of electronics. The result: the first ROM-based sampling keyboard to successfully reproduce the full complexity of acoustic instrument sounds.Bill Ham Lights
In the fall of 1964, he began working with light - electricity. Working in his studio with live and recorded sound, Ham developed a technique of spontaneous projection painting (electric action painting) involving simultaneous composition - execution - and presentation. Oils, inks, and doubtless some solids, too, are swirled together in glass dishes and projected by light, enormously magnified, onto a screen. What I liked most about Ham's method is that it is the artist's hand at all times. It is a performance. It is action painting that ceases with the action. It relies to some degree on the unpredictable , but it is also decidedly under control. Painting with light is an old chapter in artistic utopias... today there are more technological sources for light painting than at any other period of human history.
