KEEP ON TRUCKIN' RE-VISITED ------------------------------------------------------------------ Volume 1, Issue 3 October 1997 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Contents: INTRODUCTION & MUSINGS FLASH BACK CONTRIBUTIONS COOL LINKS COOL LISTS SUBSCRIBE, UNSUBSCRIBE & CONTRIBUTE INFO ****************************************************************** Introduction & Musings: Welcome to the many new subscribers who have joined us over the last month! So, what's it all about man? Keep On Truckin' Re-Visited is a moderated newsletter/list about the time between the mid 60s and mid 70s. It was designed to examine and present a positive nostalgia of a time since past. It is also designed to provide a forum for you to share your feelings, thoughts and experiences from that time frame. Please participate and help this community to grow. evolution - noun A gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form. That is exactly what I feel is taking place here with KOTRV. As this _thing_ keeps growing, you, the subscribers are helping to forge the direction it is taking. I was hoping for larger posts but as I look back at what I was wanting to accomplish it is now really starting to take effect. Shorter messages with lots of meaning. These submissions very much reflect the nostalgia that I was hoping to find. Sometimes it is just a word, a smell, hearing an old song or a small phrase that sets us to remember an event or a feeling that we had at some remote time in our past. That's nostalgia at its finest. Thank you all for the guidance. Here is an other area that is directly related as well. These short messages really turn this into more of what I have been calling this - a newsletter/list. At first it was more of a newsletter and now it seems to be becoming more of a harmonious blend of the two. Once again, thanks for the direction. I have been trying to make this newsletter/list as interactive as possible. If your email program supports hot links in messages, I am sure you will enjoy this much more. The sister web site for Keep On Truckin' Re-Visited is located at . Please stop by and see the changes and additions. KOTRV now has an archive of back issues available on-line at - . From the web site you can also post your comments, suggestions, and submissions. Please drop in and put in your 2 cents worth at . I will try to maintain a running narrative based on the submissions at this location and via email sent to . Also please note, submissions from that site will be used in this newsletter/list as well. So, warm up the lava lamp, spin some America, put on your love beads, your headband, bell bottomed pants, get yourself in the proper state of mind, kick back, and experience the newsletter. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+==+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= "Fantasy Will Set You Free" - Steppenwolf =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+==+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Flash Back Paisley? Just had to look it up. Paisley A burgh of southwest Scotland west of Glasgow. It has been a textile center since the early 18th century and became famous in the 19th century for its colorful patterned shawls. Population, 86,100. paisley - adjective 1. Made of a soft wool fabric with a colorful, woven or printed and swirled pattern of abstract, curved shapes. 2. Marked with this pattern. noun plural paisleys An article of clothing made of paisley fabric. [After Paisley.] As you may know, those old faded bell-bottoms were not always as belled as much as we wanted them to be, so we used to make some creative modifications. We used to try and find a nice piece of paisley fabric (or something as wild as possible) and add a fan shaped insert pleat into the outside seam of each leg. Sometimes just 6 inches or so up the side and sometimes all the way to the knee. This was a nice way to add diameter, color and character to an otherwise plain pair of pants. ------- Can you remember the days before the huge digital walls of video and computer generated graphics? There used to be some very powerful and wildly psychedelic backdrops used for musicians and other types of events. As I remember, it looked like colored oils were dropped onto water or something. I would sure like to know more about how this process was done - what kind of media, oil, projection devices were used, etc., and if anyone has any info or has seen anything resembling it lately. Please let me know. ------- Keeping the Flash Back section a bit smaller to make room for all the submissions this month. Truckin' Date sent: Mon, 25 Aug 1997 23:01:02 -0400 vip- What a hoot of an idea! While I can't decide which anecdote's best, I will tell ya that my memories of those days--from a New England preppy campus and anti-war marches, back to Ohio and eventful years at Kent State, then on to political activisms of various stripes and dalliances with anthropology--they were all heady times I'll not soon forget... But where has the consciousness movement gone? I'd love to explore that with others here. Have you or other list members read Terence McKenna's _Food of the Gods_? It picks up, I think, where Dr. Weil's _Natural Mind_ left off. Not that I wasn't also a big fan of Castanedas, etc., as noted below. Shamanisms (tribal, industrial and post-industrial) remain a vital tool for raising consciousness so that fear, prejudice and xenophobia may really, someday be extinct! BTW, anybody been to the Rock'n'Roll Museum lately? Great psychedelia exhibit, inaugurated by those Merry Pranksters of yore... I think that song has to be the theme song for the '70s generation, who were caught up in the glitter rock that came out of the 60s but were detached from all that social consciousness stuff the former decade had. Any thoughts, anyone? Ripple wine? Being the 'ultimate quality wine' it came in two varieties - red & white - and could be bought for 99 cents a bottle. We used to have these parties, complete with tie-dye T-shirts, incense and candles, and lots of RIPPLE! We had a favorite campground, we would get 10 or 12 couples together (the campground owner would wisely give us our own isolated spot). The custom was to peel the label off the bottle of Ripple (they were always coming off anyhow from being in the cooler) and stick the label on a tree that was located in the center of our area. By the time the weekend was over the tree had a line of Ripple labels going up as far as we could reach. If it had been a really good weekend, there might be two columns of Ripple labels. We were a harmless bunch of middle-class working family people and those Ripple Weekends were our brand of stress relief. Many laughs were had around the campfire as bottle after bottle of Ripple was passed around the circle. Plenty of good times were had. I thought I was the only one who didn't wear a suit! But hey! I am so looking forward to finding other folks who drank the Ripple back then! This past summer I tried for a bit of nostalgia and went searching through five states for a bottle of Ripple so I could soak the label off in the ice chest and leave it attached to some tree at a campsite but I guess maybe they don't make it anymore... Sheesh! What are they going to do away with next? My CLO? Anyways, glad to see this website and the newsletter. Maybe *someone* can tell me where to find some RIPPLE!!!! >>> Moderator Comment <<< Hey, what do the think the chances are? Two Ripple stories, labels on the tree, hummmmmmm. +++++ Date sent: Wed, 8 Oct 1997 14:15:25 -0500 (CDT) From: "Max G. My interests range over most if not all aspects of this list, but may I request discussion on one in particular. I'm wondering if anybody's care to swap info on the Haight Ashbury 1967 "Summer of Love." This could be something as broad as, "How did we all get there and how the hell did we survive," to "When did they institute the 50-cent minimum at the Drog Store; or when did they change its name to "DR_o_g store?" Strange, but merely signing up for this list triggered a flood of memories from those few months. Pretty intense times--don't you agree? ****************************************************************** COOL LINKS The Sixties Project & Viet Nam Generation, Inc.
