Keep On Truckin' Re-Visited is a moderated newsletter/list about the time between the mid 60s and mid 70s. It was designed to examine and present a positive nostalgia of a time since past. It is also designed to provide a forum for you to share your feelings, thoughts and experiences from that time frame. Please participate to help this community grow. -------- I have added a new section to this issue called **Events**. I will be adding up-coming events that I think you all might be interested in. If you know of any thing going on that would be of interest, please let me know so we can share the knowledge. It would be nice to have at least 2 months lead time for any listed event. Had to remove the **Flash Back** section because I am having a hard time figuring what to put in there. The whole newsletter is designed to be a Flash Back so I guess we'll see how it goes from here. -------- From the game REMINISCING Question: For 5 points - Back in 1967, one of the most popular pranks was __________? For 4 points - In Washinton, it was called "Rolling" For 3 points - In Michigan, it was called "Threading the Bushes" See below in the links area for the answer (if you haven't figured it out yet.) ++++++++++++++++++++ More fluff - less stuff... I'd like to throw out the following comments in response to a few of her excellent questions: Why did the student political movements disintegrate: First of all, as we should have learned thus far in life, nothing lasts forever -- to everything there is a season. Indeed. The season of the student political movements was perhaps ushered to a premature end, however, because we students were "outgunned", so to speak. The Establishment had the upper hand (i.e. the National Guard). I was a student at San Francisco State in 61/62 when the student uprising occurred there. It was quickly squelched with tear gas and force. I will never forget the day when S.F. State President Hiyakawa jumped up on the speakers' platform and pulled the plug on the sound equipment. That said alot about who was in charge. But I suppose the final message was sent at Kent State when the National Guard massacred several students during an anti-war protesr. A most shocking event -- the Tienaman Square of the U.S., which no doubt had a chilling effect on student activism and many of us are still pondering the why of it. One thing is clear, our Constitutional freedoms are always at peril and we will always have to fight to retain and exercise them. When I returned to the university campus in the early 80s the world of the student had completely changed. Materialism and the lethargy which it brings seemed to have taken over the student mind. In a speech class I gave a speech on "The Importance of Student Activism". I was practically booed out of the room by my classmates and received a low grade on my speech for "preaching". Grades are, after all, a more subtle means of controlling the mind and behavior. Activism never dies. Activism merely lies dormant and will surface like a muckfire whenever a person or group of people feel threatened. The best way for a government to control its people is through the use of materials goods and comfort. "Verily, I say, the lust for comfort murders the passion of the soul and then walks grinning in the funeral." Gibran, "The Prophet" As for having trouble re-entering, who re-entered? Maybe I am one of the lucky ones but I somehow have managed to live the offbeat life I have always lived. And whenever I feel like the Establishment is crowding in on me, I chuck everything and go on the road for a few years. Six months in the desert is good for the soul and the mind. In the desert you can see the countless stars and be reminded of something much bigger and much more important in life, regain your perspective of self. But to do this, one must stay free of the bonds of materialism and to be content with a cup of water, a handful of raw vegetables, and accept the poisenous snake and coyote as your kin. The trick is to live in the world but not be of it. Then you can be anywhere, anytime, and still be who you are. The best way to carry on the tradition and legacy of the 60s: Through peace, love and brotherhood. It is easy to be peaceful with those whom you love anyway. Practice being peaceful with your enemy and watch the change. Visualize the person who is your enemy with total love and light in your heart and you will transform your enemy to a friend. Perhaps the most powerful photographs to come out of the 60s was the one depicting the row of police wearing their best Sunday-go-to-Riot gear and guns all poised to do battle against the hippy protesters and one of the gun barrels had a flower sticking out of it -- put there by a peace-loving hippy. The best way to relive the 60s is to go to a Rainbow Gathering. That is, if the Gatherings have not been completed subverted these days by the Feds. I went to the Gathering in Gunnison, Colo. several years ago and it was just like stepping back into the 60s. I wished we could have all stayed in that place and time forever. I would be content to sit in a drum circle around a roaring bonfire for the rest of my days. And the meditation for world peace is one of the most powerful circles to be experienced. You can never be the same person afterward. Sorry this has gone on so long but one of the responsibilities of being an "elder of the 60s gypsy clan" is to keep the legend and the spirit alive and never let the flame die out. Check out Jonathan Cainer, a British astrologer who in my opinion is one of the best on the web. In his Overview for 1998, he says that the "Age of Aquarius" that got us all excited in the 60's was not really here yet; we were just getting a preview, and then the planets moved back out of position. He believes the Age of Aquarius is actually beginning in the next few years, and that the values and ideas that came to the forefront in the 60's will be growing in power and popularity again. It's an interesting idea; our 60's idealism and rebellion was so intertwined with our late adolescence...imagine what we can do with this material as full-grown adults. Sandy Bergeson the Creative Director sent me a copy of Reminiscing and we had a great time putting it (actually, us) through the paces. With the collective IQ of about 60, our little group of players had a hard time with most of the questions. Not sure if we are all just burnt out or what. The rules of the game are pretty simple and straight forward. As an example: Who Goes First? - The person who bought the game always goes first. If the game's owner isn't present, then the person who borrowed the game goes first - easy enough. By a roll of the dice, you determine the number of spaces you must move and the number of the Flashback question you have been assigned from a year booklet. Depending on what space you land on determines which year booklet you work from. This is a great game and it sure brought back a lot of memories - after all, that's what it was designed for.
