Results from last issue's question:
Q - Who do you think was the best guitarist of all time?

A - All of the following...

From: "Riley Saunders" bestrye@hotmail.com
Subject: Jimi obviously.

Jimi Hendrex WOW!!!! He made the guitar sing. I can sit and zone out to his music anytime. One of the best guitar solo's done by him was the star spangled banner at Woodstock.

Back Up My Hard Drive? How do I Put it in Reverse?

From: Zack Bly  zack_web@yahoo.com
Subject: guitarists

Hi, this is my first time posting to one of these things, but I saw the survey and I knew that I just had to write... I think that Jimi Hendrix is my own personal best guitarist of all time. While Eric Clapton is a great player, Jimi was just so innovative and original. So cast my vote for Hendrix.

What more can I say? The newsletter is informative and I enjoy perusing each issue. Thanks for taking your time to make such a groovy mailing thing.

From: Alan Zabicky azabicky@lowe.com.mx

Subject: Guitarist

Steve Howe of Yes. Best techniques, most tasteful

From: "Edmond P. Kida" epkida@the-kidas.net
Subject: Greatest Guitarist of All Time.....

Well, o.k., I'm a guitarist ( and I've beaten temptation to nominate myself) and I tend to look at all aspects of a guitarist's performance. At the same time I admire tonal control ( how a guitarist can produce sounds that correlate to the music they're performing.

So, with that in mind, I nominate Jeff Beck. Just take a look at some of his solo works and his work with the Yardbirds. Then grab a hold of Jeff playing Amazing Grace (on Merry Axemas
vol 1) then listen to his tribute album to the great Dwayne Eddy and you'll see what I'm talking about.

From: djazz djazz@megsinet.com
Subject: vote

Jimi Hendrix was definitely the best guitarist of all time!!!!!

From: Kathryn McCullough imtnwolf@mediaone.net
Subject: VOTE FOR BEST GUARTARIST

My vote is for Jimmy Page. He had such a profound influence on rock-n-roll.

From: "Stephanie Kluczykowski" sandoz@execpc.com
Subject: Best Guitarist

George Brigman, Terry Brooks. Two late 70s,early 80s retro guitarist in the manner of Hendrix with songs ranging from melodic to top of the line ,no holds barred, mother of all brain blasting, mind melting, cranium crunching, two in the morning, tripping

Jerry Garcia....but then again that is another category all in itself!!! Thanks, and great job on the newsletter !

From: MVPW@webtv.net  (Molly Wills)

Has to be Eric Clapton

From: Beatle-Freak@webtv.net (Beatle Freak)
Subject: Best Guitarist Vote

Pete Townshend

Why? Well.........if you can listen to the entire "30 Years Of  Maximum R&B" Anthology and disagree with me, that helps me weed out an idiot quickly.

From: chinacatjulie@excite.com
Subject: all time greatest

Steve Sweeney, ekoostik Hookah

From: "Carla Dean" carcar23@hotmail.com
Subject: jimmy hendrix

man, jimmy hendrix is most definitely the best guitarist EVER!!!! he was speaking through his music on a totally different level that blew everyone's mind. and that's what makes a GREAT musician. he opened up doors to a new style of rock and blues, and also wrote the new standards for guitar solos! no one has been that original since and nor will they.
peace,

From: Chinacatt7@aol.com
Subject: greatest guitarist of all time.

Wow, that's a very difficult question....because there have been (and still are) many great guitarists. Many of the old blues guitarists come to mind...as does Stevie-Ray Vaughn...and of course Robert Plant. I will admit that I'm completely partial in this response, but I am going to cast my vote for Jerry Garcia. The reasons I am choosing him are many, but here are a few:

1) He truly was one of the masters at his trade.

2) He was willing to play almost any kind of music: blues, country, rock-n-roll, bluegrass, folk,.... ballads or long great instrumentals. He obviously appreciated a good song, no matter what its "style", and was always willing to explore new and different ways of playing a song.

3) He seemed not to let "conventional popular music" of any of his given eras (60's - 90's) confine his musical style and exploration. His music wasn't driven by record sales.......or MTV.

4) His first love, and primary activity, was playing music live, improvisationally or traditionally arranged,....but always live, as though the music was most important (not the sales or $$)... and as though the audience was a part of his musical experience. One didn't watch a show...you "did" a show.....ie: participation.

5) At least once in his life he experienced an almost fatal illness and hospitalization that included a coma which erased his memory and coordination. He had to once again learn how to play guitar, from "scratch" almost (thanks to his long time friend, and fellow musician Merl Saunders. Now there's  friendship!!).

6) To the "very end" of his life, he continued to play live music, even as his body and stamina were quite clearly giving\ out. He may not have been able to play with the same kind of stamina he once had (because of his self-inflicted heart disease, no doubt), but he continued to play with passion...
and love for music.......and a genuine appreciation and respect for his audience and fans.

And so it goes.................

From: Arthur Ouellette arty@interlog.com
Subject: favorite guitar player

I was first exposed to Johnny Winter at the first Toronto rock festival in '69, I think it was. I'm 53 now. It was his first appearance in T.O. and I remember the never ending flurry of notes saturating the Varsity Stadium's walls. He's been one of my favorites ever since. It was a three day event Dr. John was there. He made the rain stop. Ah memories. Some of the best guitar players I heard while in residence at Rochdale college. Players who will probably remain unknown in the blur that was the continuous series of daily events in our anarchic highrise.
arty@interlog.com

From: Deadfoot13@aol.com
Subject: Greatest Guitarist of All Time

Boy, that is a tough question, but in my opinion I would have to say it was Jimi Hendrix, followed closely by Jerry Garcia and the Indigo Girls...

From: DancnBers@aol.com
Subject: Best Guitarist

The best guitarist of all time has to be Stevie Ray Vaughn. He would practice so much that he would get blisters, and once they fell off, he would glue the blisters back on, and keep on playing. Takes devotion to do that, if you ask me. He played so many groovin songs, and kept me in such a far out state of mind for years. He's a legend..

From: Lou Mazza lumaz@worldnet.att.net

Hi!

My vote is for Eric Clapton.

Hi Vincent,
My name is Vicki. I am new to your site. I just found it accidentally, and I'm so glad I did. I think it's awesome. The sixties and seventies were some of the best years of my life. I am so thankful to have lived in those years at the age I was.

People who are younger I think try to imagine what those years were like. They try to wear some of the clothes and have the same thoughts and ideals, but in less you were there, there is no substitute.

My husband laughs at me sometimes because my heart will always remember those days and part of my mind too. What I mean by that is the way of thinking I had then; alot of it is still with me.

I really believe if we could have kept that era alive, the world would be a much better and loving place! We really believed in our causes, in ourselves, in each other. We (at least speaking for myself) really did love people just for themselves, no matter who they were. We never had to impress anyone. We were all accepted as individuals. We didn't hate each other, or think about killing someone because they turned their bright lights on us or even flipped us off.

I still have those same thoughts and I thank God every day that I do. If I were to ever have a wish to go back and relive any time in my life, I would not have to think about it twice.. I would deffinately be between 1966-1977 for me.

Thanks again!

Subject: The Freakosystem

Hi - just thought I should pass along that the hilarious piece that a guy named Steve Lange was good enough to send to the newsletter in regard to the overloaded freakosystem was originally published in a peerless satiric weekly newspaper called "The Onion" , published in Madison, WI, natch, and available here in Chicago and in Boulder, CO, as well. For those not fortunate enough to be able to read it and nearly expire laughing each week, they do have a website:

onionlink1098.gif (947 bytes)

It is simply brilliant. Be good to your funny bone and check it out.

Cheers to all,

Moderator Note:
I too have seen "The Onion" in some of the underground shops in Denver, and it is a blast. I have made some changes to the last issue (ASCII and HTML) to reflect where this story came from. Peg, thanks for the info..

HI Vince,

One of your recent quotes,

"We are not human beings on a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings on a human journey.

Stephen R. Covey"

was attributed to someone who (I believe) got his quote from this one:

"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience" -- Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.

Just wondering, ya know? Correct me if I'm wrong. I don't mind being wrong, that's how I learn a lot of what I learn.  Talk with you later, Mr. Listowner. :-)

(At the very least, this might lead you into some interesting research.)

I just read KOTRV and I was very impressed. While I did not grow up in the sixties or the seventies I would consider myself part of the new hippies. I am promoting an e-zine that deals exclusively with the Drug War and the growing reform movement to end it. A lot of people in your age group are disillusioned about changing drug policy but now is the time to act. THings are changing rapidly overseas and we are seeing big ripples here in the US. We need your help. Please put us as a cool link on your newsletter and feel free to ad our banner.

Machine Head
Deep Purple

Original Year 1972
Producer Deep Purple
Engineer Martin Birch
Studio/Live Studio
Mono/Stereo Stereo
Running Time 37 Minutes
Label Warner Bros. Records

Album Notes:
Deep Purple: Ian Gillan (vocals); Richie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards); Roger Glover (bass); Ian Paice (drums).

Recorded in Montreux, Switzerland in December 1971.

All selections written by Deep Purple.

From the heady intro of "Highway Star", written in a couple of hours on a bus between shows, to the lazy beat of "Space Truckin", Machine Head would have remained one of the classic line-up's (Glover, Paice, Gillan, Blackmore, Lord) great albums. However, the hand of fate took them to Montreux at the same time as Frank Zappa's Mothers Of Invention, and their witnessing of the burning down of the Casino, immortalized in "Smoke On The Water" with Blackmore's plaintive riff, studied and dedicated to memory in a thousand guitar classes, and Gillan's simple retelling of events, elevated them and their record to legendary status. Da da da, dada dada, da da da, da da.

Track Listing
