comment: The 60's was a time where a teenager could just let
loose and have a little fun without having to worry about the cops being in their way all
the time. It was also a time when the U.S. was clean from most diseases and people didn't
have to worry so much about catching STDS all the time. I think most people in the world
today would really like for that time to come back and be revisited and even though we may
try it will never be succeeded. We can only succeed it through our own minds!
comment: this is great finding you guys here that was a time

Subject: Just a few thoughts...
Hey, everyone. First of all I'd like to thank you, Vincent, for putting together this
list. It's always alot of fun to read the posts and to follow the cool links. I have a few
comments on the meaning of the word hippie, to me, at least. In my opinion being a hippie
has nothing to do with how you dress, what you look like, how much or what sort of
drugs you use or what language you use to express yourself. There were/are plenty of
people who called themselves hippies then and now who don't have a clue. It's easy to have
the look or talk the talk but being a hippie is a state of mind... an attitude. I was a
teenager in the 70's and I did my fair share of things that would make a typical parent
freak out ! Drugs were easy to get, and believe me, I got more than my share but that
didn't make me a hippie. I wore my bell-bottoms with patches all over them, had my hair
long and straight and walked barefoot but I wasn't a hippie because of that. What made me
a hippy then and now has to do with the facts that I CARE about other people. I CARE about
the earth and the plants & animals that live on it. I hope I've taught my own
children, by example, how to show respect for those things and people that we share the
planet with. I hope to see the day that we all get back to that hippie way of thinking.
One more thought on a much lighter note ! I wanted to invite you all to visit my
website. If you like classic rock 'n' roll I think you'll wanna check out my site. I have
over 400 full-length songs recorded in mpeg-layer3 stereo wavs, cool classic rock MIDI
files, "Groovy Graphics" and much more. I'll leave the incense burnin' for ya !

Subject: The Beat scene
To: hippy@vipgrafx.com
hello
In the last newsletter there were comments made by one particulary intelligent fellow
about his experiences with the book "On the Road". I'd like to state that being
in the middle of reading "On the road", I already see exactly what this man was
saying. On the road makes me want to do all that Sal did too. I want to go on trips with
Neal, Jack, Allen, William and all the rest. I feel being on a trip with the beat figures
would be the most profound experience of anyone's life. Neal in particular was a genius.
In the end with his trance-like state of hammer flipping and the beginning with his
America. The Beat scene was DEFINITELY the beginning of the whole
sixties counterculture without a doubt. The Beat era started the new way of thinking.
Thinking for yourselves, experiencing life with others, learning about what existence is
really about, thinking, learning, experiencing! THe Beat scene was more than coffee houses
and poetry, it was about changing the way you percieve yourself, others, life. It was the
beginning of the beautiful sixties. Sorry if this sounds a bit on the melodramatic side
but I love Beat culture as well. Thanks for listening.
Peace and love,
Brittany

Subject: Musings From A Flower Child
Hey, what's happening? KOTR is far out! Thanks!
"You weren't there", an expression common among Vietnam Veterans, kind of sums
up my feelings about trying to put the experience of the 60's into words or images for
people who weren't there to understand what it was really like. Words and images will
never reveal the strong feelings of love we had for one another, while having such disdain
for "the establishment". The "establishment" included the government,
big business and the pigs. I lived in the Maryland/Washington, DC area during the 60's. I
graduated from high school in 1968.
The hippy movement, the flower child, peace, love and the have a nice day attitude that so
permeated our very beings were all results of our environment. We learned that war is not
a
good thing from WWII movies on TV. Then there was the atom bomb to deal with, so we
convinced ourselves we could survive by building bomb shelters in our back yards. Then we
saw a young man's life snuffed out by a sniper in Dallas, TX. Then we saw black men, women
and children rioting and being beaten and attacked by dogs and fire hoses. We saw their
leader, Martin Luther King Jr., murdered before his work was done. There was a glimmer of
hope in Bobby Kennedy, but he also was killed. And, always constant in the background, the
number of Americans killed each day in South Vietnam. The war was so distant, never
affecting our lives back here in the world, until those killed were our neighbor, our
friend, our brother.
We all were grief stricken and very angry. How could "they" watch the news and
then immediately get on with their comfortable little lives and do nothing about
it???????? We left, we found each other, and we comforted each other while we fought in
the streets for changes. Those of us who could afford to would rent a pad close to DC and
open it for people to stay during the times we were demonstrating. Sometimes we had 20+
people in a small apartment. We all shared whatever we had with each other, and no one
ever ripped off anybody else. We were united in a just cause - end the war, NOW! While not
out in "the field" (the Washington, DC memorial lawn) we relaxed by cooling off
in the Jefferson Memorial pool, or the fountains, smoked a lot of pot and shared knowledge
with each other. This is how the other movements arose, like back to nature and womens'
lib. A very exciting time!! Everything seemed to be going well until the Kent State
murders. 4 dead in Ohio. That really put a hurtin' on the demonstrations, and most
hippies just left. We ended up living in communes, or in other countries, a lot of city
hippies moved to the country, but some are still out there on the road.
God bless 'em.
I was one that moved to the country, going organic. I married a Vietnam Veteran. Three
years ago I went back to Washington, DC and have returned every year since. I attend the
"In Memory" program they have there for Vietnam Veterans that died as a
result of their service in Vietnam. I go there to honor my late husband.
Well, I still love, I prefer peace, I hate war and injustice, and I still smoke a lot of
pot! Thanks for letting me
share.
Peace.

Subject: missing objects
Dear Vincent.
This is the part missing from my story...
The police went berserk after a girl dared to dance topless on a platform and after seeing
the golden opportunity to kick the shit out of many longhairs. It was the first and last
festival of its kind in México. Needless to say, rock concerts were banned. For many
years we only had access to the top r+r bands via TV, records and magazines. Fortunately
that is over now. Even an aging Mick Jagger trying still to get some Satisfaction was
worth the wait.
Paz y amor desde México...
Héctor.
Thanx, I'll keep in touch.
> Moderators Comment:
This is (as they say) the rest of the story.. missing from the the last issue. Not sure
what happened but here it is..
Thanks Héctor!

FEATURED BOOK
Change
of Partners
by David Margolis
Hardcover - 231 pages 1 Ed edition (August 1997)
Amazon.com Sales Rank: 599,281
Can a romantic young man find love in a 60s commune?
False modesty aside, I think CHANGE OF PARTNERS is probably the most loving and accurate
account of Sixties communal living to appear in American fiction. It's also a very raunchy
book--I can't believe I wrote some of this stuff, let alone that I actually lived through
some of it. Publishers Weekly called CHANGE OF PARTNERS "sweet-spirited,"
referred to me as a "natural storyteller," and praised the novel for capturing
the Counterculture's special "blend of innocence and self-indulgence." I will be
interested to hear readers' responses and reveries |
